  • Prepared Your Documents: These documents will be required from students applying to study at the Open Window Institute for the first time. You will need to upload them as part of your application so make sure you have the following before you begin the online process.

All students who wish to apply for admission at the Open Window Institute are recommended to have the following essential documents/attachments (scanned & uploaded to an electronic device)

  • Bachelor of Arts Honours in Visual Communication

Open Window’s Bachelor of Arts Honours in Visual Communication,  is offered at an NQF level 8 and consists of 120 credits. 

The duration of this programme is one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study. The programme is tailored to allow the student to investigate a specific area of specialisation related to the fields of Visual Communication Design, Creative Technology or Film Arts, in an independent manner. 

The course emphasises a proficiency in scholarly research practice and a mastery of the relevant creative praxis. Postgraduate scholarly abilities, theoretical knowledge and research skills culminate in a research report. The development of practical abilities, skills and techniques suitable to a specific concept of research results in a body of work which is showcased at the end of the degree programme. 

Possible areas of expertise include Communication Design, Illustration, Photography, Film & TV, Sound Design, Production Design,  Screen Acting, Screenwriting,  Motion Design,  3D Animation, Game Design, Interaction Design, Interactive Development and 3Dimensional Design.

Open Window Institute Undergraduate Courses

Open Window students can choose one of three degrees:

  • Bachelor of Arts in Visual Communication Design
  • Bachelor of Film Arts or Bachelor of Interaction Design

VISUAL COMMUNICATION DESIGN

The Open Window VISUAL COMMUNICATION programme is a progressive platform for learners to explore the disciplines of Communication DesignPhotography and Illustration. The programme is designed to offer the graduate a sustainable career by focusing on an area of specialisation in one or two of the above fields whilst encouraging interdisciplinary awareness through a wide selection of skills-based modules. This approach provides flexibility that promotes broad thinking and interdisciplinary articulation within a student’s chosen field of study.

  • APS score of 22 (or p-count of at least 14)
  • English with a minimum APS of 4 (50%)

FILM ARTS

The FILM ARTS programme offers an exciting immersion in audio-visual communication, with a wide range of skills that enable students to work in tomorrow’s demanding time-based media environment. Emphasis is placed on narrative and storytelling across all audio-visual moving image “platforms”. The programme is designed to offer the graduate a sustainable career by focusing on an area of specialisation while encouraging an interdisciplinary audiovisual awareness. This qualification is intended for scriptwritersbroad base producer/director filmmakerssound designers3D animatorsmotion designersgame designersproduction designers and screen actors.

The Bachelor of INTERACTION DESIGN degree at Open Window is the first of its kind locally, offering innovative study in the diverse and rapidly evolving fields focusing on user-centred design principles with a specialization in Interaction DesignInteractive Development or 3D Design. This degree provides the graduate with a sustainable career in these dynamic and emerging fields, by providing specialisation in a discipline of choice, while still allowing for significant exposure in a range of related skills across the design and development industries. Graduates are equipped with strong problem-solving and research skills in order to craft meaningful experiences through digital and physical products and service

Open Window Institute Certificate Courses

These courses are tailored to provide learners with essential and appropriate skill-sets with which they can enter the competitive design, photography, film and animation industries. The certificates are taught by industry experts and provide learners with hands-on, professional skills. The duration of these programmes is one year of full-time study.

The Open Window Institute is registered at MICT Seta (Accreditation Number: ACC/2016/07/0012) for the following programmes:

  • National Certificate: 3D Animation and Visual Effects NQF Level 5 (149 credits)
  • National Certificate: Film and Television Production NQF Level 5 (122 credits)
  • FET Certificate: Photography NQF Level 4 (128 credits)
  • Certificate Design Techniques NQF Level 5 (120 credits)The next session of Certificate courses commences in February 2021.
